What’s the Best Age for Baby Photos?
Newborn to One Year Explained
As a professional Cleveland Ohio newborn and baby photographer, one of the most common questions I hear from new and expecting parents is: “What’s the best age to photograph my baby?” The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer! Each stage in your baby’s first year brings something unique and memorable. Whether it’s the sleepy newborn snuggles or the first wobbly steps at one year old, every age has its magic.
Here’s a quick guide to the best stages for baby photos and what makes each one so special:
The Newborn Stage: 5-21 days old
This is the most popular and most recommended time for a newborn photography session—and for good reason. During the first two weeks of life, babies are still in that sleepy, curly phase. They’re easier to pose, love being swaddled, and often sleep through most of their session.
This is when we can capture those soft, snuggly images of your baby curled up in blankets, in womb-like poses, or gently cradled in your arms. It’s also a wonderful time to include parents and siblings for those early bonding shots.
TIP: Be sure to book your newborn session during your pregnancy to secure your spot on my calendar!

3–5 Months Old: First Smiles and Expressions
Around three to four months, your baby begins to develop more head control and starts showing real personality. We may not get those sleepy, posed shots from the newborn stage, but we get something just as sweet—genuine smiles, bright eyes, and adorable chubby cheeks.
This age is perfect for a shorter milestone session where we focus on capturing your baby’s growing curiosity, giggles, and sweet interactions with you.
TIP: If you can, wait to schedule this session until baby is comfortable with tummy time. This pose will help add a bit of variety to your gallery.

6–8 Months Old: The Sitter Stage
The sitter stage is one of my absolute favorites. Babies at this age can usually sit independently but aren’t quite crawling yet—making it the perfect window for photos. They’re super expressive, full of smiles, and love playing with their toes, toys, and camera-friendly props.
This stage is all about joy, discovery, and capturing your baby’s personality before they become a moving target!
TIP: It’s best to schedule a sitter session once baby can sit pretty well on his/her own (can hold a sitting pose for 5-10+ seconds). However, I can always prop baby up if need be.

12 Months: The Big ONE
Turning one is a huge milestone—for both baby and parents! At this age, we can document those first steps, tentative standing, and their budding toddler energy. Many families also choose to include a cake smash, which is a fun and adorably messy way to celebrate.
One-year sessions can be classic, playful, or themed—and you are welcome to include updated family portraits as well. Reach out and let’s chat about everything you would like to accomplish. I’d love to hear about your ideas for the session!
TIP: If you have a specific theme in mind, make sure to give me plenty of notice so I can order any props or special balloon colors.
