All the things you need to know.
Senior year is a big year. It’s YOUR year … full of big milestones, meaningful “lasts” and even bigger dreams for what’s ahead. Your senior photo session is a chance to celebrate everything that makes you unique at this moment in your life. Whether you love being in the spotlight or are totally camera-shy, this prep guide is here to help you feel confident and prepared every step of the way. From outfit tips to location ideas, we’ll cover all the little details so your session is fun, stress-free and totally you.
Take your pick!
Location Options
I have compiled a blog list of my favorite locations in Hudson and nearby communities. Take your time looking through each option and feel free to read through my thoughts (there are lots of photos as well). If you had another spot in mind, let me know and I can check it out ahead of time if I am not familiar. I don’t mind traveling 20 minutes outside of Hudson, but anything past that typically requires a travel fee.
What you need to know
Before Your Session
Session Questionnaire
After booking, you will receive a session questionnaire that will ask about your personal style, specifics you want for the session, ideas or concerns you might have, etc. It is important to take your time and fill out the questionnaire as completely as possible. The more you can tell me about what you’re hoping for, the more successful our session will be. I welcome you to send along photos of my past work that you love.
What to Bring
Below are some items you might find helpful to have on-hand at your senior photo session.
- Comb/hairbrush
- Makeup for retouches
- Hair spray for flyaways
- Accessories (hats, jewelry, ties, etc)
- Props (varsity jacket, instrument, sports equipment, etc)
- Towel/oil blotting sheets for hot days
- Blanket/coat for cold weather
Weather Issues
If weather looks to be an issue, I will touch base with you 24-48 hours before your session to discuss your options (ie. change the session time, reschedule the day, etc). Since the forecast changes quite often in this area, I usually like to wait until the day of your session to make a final decision, if at all possible.
Rescheduling
Life happens! If there is a family emergency or your senior isn’t feeling well, just reach out and we can discuss a change of plans. Please know that I am happy to work with any issues that arise, and that I try to leave time in my schedule to accommodate them. I’d love to hear from you 24+ hours before the session if at all possible.
What to Wear
Be Yourself – But Elevated. Choose outfits that reflect your personal style but feel a little more polished than your everyday wear. You want to feel like you, just a little more dressed up.
Be Comfortable. Choose outfits that fit appropriately, make you feel comfortable and allow you to move. Consider the location where you’ll be shooting and the weather for the day/season.
Variety is Key. Include a range of looks and colors that best fit your personality and style. Think about these categories: casual, dressy, school-related, sports-related, romantic, preppy, etc.
Stick to Flattering Colors. Solids, neutrals, and earth-tones tend to photograph beautifully—think blues, taupes, creams, olives, or dusty pinks. Bold, bright colors make outfits pop. Avoid neons, large, distracting logos. and super busy prints. Textures and layers (like lace, knits, or denim) are a great way to add interest.
Think About the Location. Match your outfit to the vibe. A field or park? Flowy dresses or natural textures work well. Urban downtown? Trendy outfits or sleek layers look great. Not sure of your style? Keep it classic and timeless.
Don’t Forget the Details. A sweater or jean jacket can really add dimension and variety to your poses. Changing and adding accessories can quickly and easily change the look of an outfit. There are tons of options: hats, scarves, statement earrings/necklaces, hair accessories, etc.
Hair + Makeup. If you will be having a professional do your hair and makeup, make sure to leave enough wiggle room in case the appointment goes a bit long. If you’ll be doing it yourself, I recommend doing your makeup slightly heavier than normal for photographs.
Senior Session Quick Tips
- Iron/steam all outfits to be sure they’re wrinkle free. Don’t forget about proper undergarments and accessories for each look.
- Pack water and a few light snacks to bring with you.
- Drink plenty of water the day of your session and make sure to get a full night of sleep.
- Be careful with any peels, masks or other skin treatments the week of your session.
- Avoid overuse of self tanner, spray tans and the actual sun in the days leading up to your session.
- Bring makeup with you to retouch as necessary.
- Make sure your nails are as you want them. Your hands will show in close-ups.
- Be prepared for the weather. Layer up if it’s chilly or opt for breathable fabrics in summer. Comfort matters—you’ll look your best when you feel your best.

Let’s Do This!
Session Day is Here
Get ready for a fun, relaxed experience that’s all about celebrating you. We’ll start your senior photo session by going over your outfits and choosing the perfect order and locations based on the light and vibe. Throughout the session, I’ll guide you with natural poses and prompts so you never feel awkward or unsure—my goal is to help you feel confident and look your best. Expect lots of movement, laughs, and little breaks along the way. This is your time to shine, and I’m here to make sure you enjoy every moment while we create beautiful, timeless images you’ll love.
a note about editing…
I hand edit every photo that you receive in your final gallery. Edits can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks depending on the season. Please keep this in mind when scheduling your session. I edit out anything that isn’t permanent, such as acne, bruises, scratches, bug bites, etc. Permanent features like scars, birthmarks, moles, tattoos, etc. will only be edited if you specifically request it.
What to Expect
After your Session
Choosing your Final images
One to two weeks after your session, I will email you a link to your online proof gallery. You’ll be able to view each watermarked image individually and also in a beautiful slideshow set to music. You will have 4 days to choose the final images included in your session, and will also have the option to purchase additional images.
Time to shop!
Your final gallery will also feature all of the prints and art products that I offer for purchase. I have a wide variety of unique, high-quality items that are perfect for showing off your favorite portraits.
